Leslie Weston
Image Description
Leslie Weston is a pioneer in the study and application of plant interactions with other plants, microbes and herbivores. Using advanced techniques in microscopy and chemical analysis she has achieved a fundamental understanding of the localisation of secondary plant products, the process of root exudation, and the transformation of bioactive molecules in the rhizosphere. She has identified the role of various metabolites and biosynthetic pathways involved in plant defence systems, and the regulation of plant-soil rhizosphere interactions. Through intensive study and selection of competitive crops and groundcovers, she has achieved sustainable and effective weed management in diverse agroecosystems.

Matthew Bailes
Image Description
Matthew Bailes is an astrophysicist who has specialised in the study of pulsars, transient radio bursts and gravitation, making major contributions to establishing Australia’s high international profile in these areas. In particular, he has played a pivotal role in the development of a new branch of astrophysics, Fast Radio Bursts, guiding projects that led to Australia’s dominance of the field. Professor

Jonathan Carapetis

AM FAA FAHMS

Jonathan Carapetis
Image Description
Jonathan Carapetis is the global leader in rheumatic heart disease and Group A Streptococcal disease. He was the first to quantify the disease burden in Australia and globally, prove skin infection is key in pathogenesis and demonstrate that environmental rather than genetic or organism factors drive disease burden. His work led to a WHO Global Resolution on Rheumatic Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease. Carapetis has reshaped the control of Rheumatic Heart Disease globally, particularly among Australia’s Indigenous people. His leadership of two Institutes and as President of the Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes has changed the way medical research is done.

Emeritus Professor

Peter Langridge

AM FAA FTSE

Peter Langridge
Image Description
Peter Langridge is an eminent leader in the development and implementation of cereal breeding technologies, within Australia and internationally. He initiated the application of molecular marker technology in large cereal and legume breeding programs in South Australia. These technologies were ultimately adopted by all major cereal breeding programs in Australia. At the same time, he trained many postgraduate students in emerging breeding technologies. Langridge also pioneered the introduction of plant functional genomics in Australia into crop improvement programs and was a member of a core group that initiated the international barley genome sequencing program.
